Candles, Cake, and Clarity: Why Your Birthday is the Best Date for an Estate Plan Review

Over the years, Oprah Winfrey gave us countless lessons on how to live intentionally, but one of her most practical pieces of advice centered on self-care: using your birthday as a recurring reminder for critical annual health checks. She championed the idea of scheduling annual mammograms and wellness exams right around your birthday, framing it not as a chore, but as an empowering gift of health to yourself.
Yesterday, I celebrated my own birthday—a day full of warm wishes, calls from loved ones, and, of course, cake. And as I reflected on another trip around the sun, Oprah’s ritual came to mind. It turns out that a birthday is not just the perfect trigger for a physical check-up; it is also the ideal annual date for a quick legal health audit.
We are already conditioned to handle annual check-ups around recurring milestones: physicals, dental cleanings, vehicle registrations, and tax deadlines. Yet, estate planning is too often treated as a "one and done" errand. We sign our documents, tuck the binder onto a shelf or into a safe deposit box, and assume we are set for life.
In reality, an estate plan is a living blueprint that should evolve as your life does. Pairing a quick review with your birthday ensures that keeping your plan current never slips off your radar.
An annual check-up doesn't mean rewriting your documents every September. Most years, your review will take less than five minutes and end with a satisfying, "Everything still looks great."
To run your own birthday audit, simply pull out your documents and ask these four questions:
1. Have My Decision-Makers Changed? Take a look at the people you designated as your Personal Representative (Executor), Trustee, or Powers of Attorney. Are they still willing and able to serve? Have their life circumstances, health, or relationships with you shifted over the past year?
2. Has My Family Structure Shifted? Consider major life milestones that occurred in your circle over the last 12 months. Were there any marriages, divorces, births, or deaths? Did a child turn 18, or has an adult child become financially independent?
3. Have My Assets or Real Estate Changed? Did you buy or sell property, start a business, roll over a retirement account, or open new bank accounts? If you have a Revocable Living Trust, you’ll want to ensure any new major assets were properly titled into the name of the trust over the past year.
4. Are My Beneficiary Forms Aligned? Take a quick glance at your primary and contingent beneficiary designations on life insurance policies, 401(k)s, IRAs, and payable-on-death (POD) bank accounts. Do those forms match the current intent of your primary estate documents?
Blowing out the candles is about celebrating the life you are building. I urge you to take five minutes once a year to confirm your legal blueprint is up to date ensures that everything you love and work for remains fully protected for the years ahead. Then go out and have a lovely celebration!
