It is November 1st, and in large parts of Latin America that means it is the
Day of the Dead. A major holiday used to honor departed loved ones, it is becoming more common in the US as immigrants bring this 3,000 tradition to the United States. Traditions vary from wearing masks and dancing to visiting grave sites to playing the deceased's favorite music or eating their favorite food. What a lovely way share the loves of those gone with those that have just arrived.
My father left us in the fall of 2009. My son was only 13 months old and my daughter was just a twinkle in my eye, not arriving until late summer of 2010. The Day of the Dead is a lovely way, even though we are not Latino, to share with them the loves of their Grandfather. Dinner tonight will feature one of his favorites - Swedish Meatballs.
How might you honor your departed loved ones?
